This is just a quick note letting you know that Jacob (2nd son) and I had an absolutely wonderful time on our recent travels. We visited five countries in 14 days, June, 2000: Egypt, Italy, France, the Vatican and Monaco. Our Egypt visit was especially memorable...

*swam in Red Sea (about 30km below Suez Canal)
*saw Fort Rashid (mouth of Nile) where Rosetta Stone was discovered in 1799
*saw Pyramids (went inside Great Pyramid) and Sphinx of Giza -- rode camels at dusk (mystically
  beautiful)
*got some great video for Return To Glory film project
*visited Cairo Museum -- King Tut's treasures and much, much more
*one hour wind powered boat ride on the Nile
*hot desert travel going to Red Sea (driving with open windows is like sitting in front of a blast furnace
  for a few hours)
*in a busy Egyptian marketplace we haggled and got a good deal on Jacob's silver "promise ring" --
his statement of preserving sexual purity till marriage
*wild drivers in Cairo -- honking horns, pedestrians and cars everywhere. No traffic rules that we
  could see
*R/T train ride to Alexandria (immediately fertile north of Cairo -- Delta region)
*everybody wants money from "rich" tourists in Egypt!
*stayed at Al Horeya Hotel in Heiropolis
*ate at McDonalds, KFC and Arbys -- good Egyptian food!
*In Rome saw the actual (archaeologically proven) prison where Paul and Peter were imprisoned
  (incredible)
*In Rome saw what they believe to be the actual whipping post used when Jesus was scourged
*Colosseum, Pantheon, Vatican, Sistene Chapel, St. Peter's Cathedral, Tiber River, etc.
*Venice -- rode the boats around the canals
*Pompeii -- saw the ancient city "frozen" in time from ash and lava from Vesuvius
*Leaning Tower of Pisa (it is beautiful as everyone says)
*swam in Mediterranean Sea -- Egypt (King Farouk's Palace beach) and Naples, Italy
*saw catacombs (St. Callistas) just outside Rome (moving experience)
*Savonna -- stayed two nights at a youth hostel built into an old, picturesque fortress on the
  Mediterranean
*Cannes, France (where they have the famous film festival)
*stayed in some youth hostels (15 bucks a night, in a dorm with 4 others from around the world in
bunk beds -- great experience! And price usually includes breakfast the next morning!)
*both kept daily journals
*drove in rental car for over 3700km on entire trip...

We were exhausted and we had a blast! It was good to get home.

Jacob in Cairo.

Ah, the MacDonald's restaurant near our hotel. A reminder of home. You can see MacDonald's near my right shoulder.

The first evening in Cairo and we are on our
camel-n-horse trek at the Giza Plateau.

The sunset behind the pyramids.

Another photo of the pyramids before the sun went down.
