David (1st son) and I went to Israel and the United
Kingdom in April, 1994. We arrived in London for a day and I took David to
see the movie, Schindler's List, at the Theater in Piccadilly Circus. I
wanted to give him some context for experiencing Israel. We got to Tel
Aviv around 2AM. I wanted to see the sun rise on the Mount of Olives. This
introduced us to an absolutely wonderful experience for the rest of our
trip. Here are some of our experiences, with photos below. Feel free to
take your time viewing all eight pages of the Photo Album.
* Saw the Temple Mount, where Solomon's Temple was built and the Mosque of
Omar
* The exhilarating experience of haggling for the best prices in
Jerusalem's Old City marketplace
* Swam, no floated, in the Dead Sea. As hard as we tried we couldn't make
ourselves go under water
* Saw Jacob's Tomb in Shechem
* Spent the better part of a day at the of Mount Hermon where David and I
bowled rocks down the
snow. Sounds crazy, but we had a wonderful time
* Hiked around the Qumran Caves. We believe that we saw 8 of the 13 caves
where the Dead Sea
Scrolls were discovered
* David drove our rental car around on a road at the base of the Qumran
caves
* Went to the top of Masada, where almost 1000 Jews were fortified for
about 2 years after the
destruction of Jerusalem by Titus of Rome
* Saw Engedi, an oasis where David hid from King Saul
* Went to top of Mount Gilboa, where King Saul was killed.
* Visited the Institute for Temple Research. Saw and heard a lot of
interesting things
* Visited Yad Veshem, the memorial to the Jews killed during the Holocaust
* Visited Caesarea Philippi, the ancient spot where the Jordan River
emerges from the mouth of a cave
* Went on top of the Mount of Transfiguration
* Visited Capernaum, the home of Peter and saw a synagogue where Jesus
taught
* Saw the Valley of Megiddo, the place where Armageddon is supposed to
happen
* Couldn't get to Bethlehem because of some recent unrest in that area
* Walked down underneath the ground all along the Western Wall, where
there are original street
pavement stones and the spot which is 30 feet from the
original Holy of Holies
* Went to an Easter Service at Westminster Abbey
* Visited the British Museum and Science Museum in London
We were exhausted and we had a blast! But it sure was good to be home!
