PHILLIS WHEATLEY
-- A signed copy of "Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral" (1773), the
first book written by an African American. This is a First Edition copy. Henry Pelham's (original owner of the book)
signature in the upper right hand corner. Phillis Wheatley's signature is seen in reverse on the right hand side.

llows Connecticut slave "Juba Negro" to join the Continental Army at half pay
-- Juba would gain his freedom as well, as during his service, he changed his name to "Juba Freeman."
