| "History matters. It
provides our identity, it structures our relationships, and it
defines the terms of our debates. We must learn from it, even
if doing so is, at times, annoying and uncomfortable. Yet
experience makes clear that classrooms alone cannot be relied
on to teach the lessons that must be learned by the vast
numbers of Americans whose collective future may depend on
that education. History must be taught not only in the academy
but in the variety of nonacademic settings where Americans go
to learn." |

The Mark E. Mitchell
Collection of African American History
is an unprecedented compilation of over 4,000 original
historic manuscripts, documents, newspapers, books,
photographs and artifacts, dating from the early 1600s
through the present day -- referred to by some as a "National
Treasure". The Collection vividly “brings to
life” the African American experience from its origins in
the great empires of Western Africa, through the
terrible Slave Trade and Middle Passage, Slavery
and Emancipation in America, Reconstruction, the
Harlem Renaissance, the Civil Rights movement,
and contemporary America. A
surprising number of pieces in this archive can be found
nowhere else in the world, even in major museums!
From the original handwritten poem, "Ocean", of
Phillis Wheatley in 1773, to a unique proof copy of the 1850 Fugitive
Slave Law, the items in this superlative collection have
astonished even the most learned historians and scholars.
And, owing to its amazingly comprehensive and largely visual
nature, the Mitchell Collection is uniquely designed to
be the centerpiece for a major museum or institution as
well as a superb touring exhibition.
The Mark E. Mitchell Collection has
taken its place among an elite group of educational
resources that can help teach both today's schoolchildren
and adults, as well as future generations, the true
history of African Americans, much of which was omitted from
our nation’s textbooks and curricula as historian Carter G.
Woodson and so many others have written.
Perhaps Chris Haley, actor/writer/producer and Great Grandson of
Kunte Kinte, said it best after experiencing the Mitchell
Collection firsthand:
--"The
Materials you have assembled would draw tears to the eyes
of wizened African American scholars and paint wonder on the
faces of grade school children...There is no doubt such a
collection demands to be made accessible to as many
people of all races as possible. What you have gathered
dramatically emphasizes what my uncle (Alex Haley) and
some other prominent black figures have said which I
herein paraphrase, 'To know where you're going, you've got
to know where you've been.' The Mark E. Mitchell African
American History Collection certainly fulfills that creed."
This collection:
1. Tears down barriers between Blacks and Whites, young and
old...
2. Opens and changes hearts and minds...
3. Surrounds Black people with their ancestors, giving a
sense of awe and wonderment for all...
4. Causes people to think and want to learn more, leading to
continuing achievement, scholarship and education...
5. Leaves a legacy...
