What makes the Black Courage Foundation different? We
believe it’s our hands-on approach that incorporates a visual experience with
historic truth to educate and convey to our nation’s schoolchildren and adults alike, the critical importance of having a strong grasp of African American History in their personal, social and professional lives.
After reviewing the following BCF Programs and Activities, you may want to read
the Executive Summary, which will give you a quick overview of the
magnitude of the vision and scope.
I. BCF HEADQUARTERS and BCF
MUSEUM / GALLERY. BCF
administrative headquarters will also house the primary BCF museum
exhibition and interactive education center (Gallereum).
It will be equipped with an on-the- hour viewing of the Return to
Glory: The Powerful Stirring of the Black Man film, a research
room and a BCF book store.
II. INITIAL HISTORICAL
EXHIBIT. BCF has an exclusive agreement with Mark E. Mitchell for
his major Collection and Research Archive of African American History
that spans four centuries and includes thousands of highly significant
documents, manuscripts and related artifacts.
III. BCF WEBSITE. BCF is
developing an interactive web site, with most of the documents and
related materials available for international review and study. This
website is the “Clicks” component of the BCF "Bricks and Clicks"
Program. The “Bricks" represents the Museum/Experience Center and
Satellite Galleries.
VI. MAJOR INTERACTIVE MUSEUM and
EXPERIENCE CENTER. Using the latest technologies and media
techniques, the BCF will develop a major center for the innovative
exhibition and presentation of the history of African Americans from
ancient Africa and during the past four centuries in America. The
center will be designed to be high-touch and high-impact, taking
advantage of the most advanced installations possible. Talks have
already begun with developers of a major international tourist site
(which already has millions of visitors annually) to locate the Museum
on or near the attraction.
|
The BCF Foundation has developed a five-phase concept.
The ever-expanding interactive web site will include images and the
historical backgrounds of the historic documents in the Collection. Occupying at
least 4,000 square feet, the Gallery is our second step, which
then provides a springboard from which we will develop the third
phase,
the much more expansive museum experience. The fourth phase will
bring a permanent BCF-sponsored Gallery to selected major cities
across America. The fifth phase calls for a BCF Gallery in
selected cities internationally with an historic connection to African
Americans such as London, Liverpool, Toronto, Niagara Falls, Portugal, Benin, Ghana, Nigeria,
South Africa, Brazil, Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda,
Haiti, Jamaica, Trinidad and others -- filled with
relevant historical documents and artifacts.

V. PRESERVING BLACK HISTORY:
BCF is
creating perhaps the first major fund ever to locate, rescue, and
preserve the rapidly-decreasing sources of important historic
documents and artifacts that might otherwise be unavailable in private
collections, dealer inventories, and estates. Funds are being sought
to procuring rare pieces of African Americana for its museum, branch
galleries, traveling exhibitions and historical research program. The
Black Courage Foundation plans to make its collections and findings
available to both scholars and students alike.
VI. SCHOLARSHIPS:
Beginning in calendar year 2006, the Foundation plans to award two or
more annual scholarships to high school seniors wanting to pursue a
college degree. The students will be chosen via a history essay
contest conducted and judged by the BCF Board of Advisors.
VII. NATIONAL JUNIOR CURATOR PROGRAM:
Black
Courage Foundation experts will train high school students in history,
speaking, professional and social skills on an after-school and
weekend schedule. Upon completion of their training, these “Junior
Curators” will give tours in the BCF’s Museum and branch galleries for
visitors and guests, and will expertly explain the history of specific
people, events, and the documents and artifacts themselves. These
future leaders will have a unique opportunity to interact with both
dignitaries and the general public outside of their regular school
curriculum.
VIII. THE BCF HISTORICAL RESEARCH
INSTITUTE:
The
Black Courage Foundation will periodically sponsor major symposiums,
conferences and lectures on African American history, culture and
heritage with leading historians and scholars. In addition, scholars
and students alike will be permitted to pour over BCF’s massive
collection of original documents, letters, newspapers, and antiquarian
books that provide original source material for new books, papers and
historical research, which will promote and enhance our nation's
understanding of its history. The Institute will be headed by noted
author and professor, Dr. James Oliver Horton, President of the
Organization of American Historians, and the Benjamin Banneker
Professor of American Studies and History at
George
Washington University.
IX. MOBILE EXHIBIT. BCF will develop and equip a bus/van with an
exhibit consisting of replicas of the permanent history collection and
the Return to Glory film to take directly to the people, particularly in
urban inner-cities and rural neighborhoods. The museum bus/van will
open its doors on streets, parks, parking lots, roads and fields to
insure that all children and adults have the opportunity to view the
exhibit and film. It will participate in festivals, conferences and
other venues that provide audiences to be educated and inspired.
|
X. RETURN TO GLORY FOUNDATION
(RTG). RTG
has granted a ten-year exclusive license for the BCF to screen the
Return to Glory film at any or all of its Galleries and/or Museums.
BCF will purchase RTG products at a discount from RTG for retail
purposes. RTG will serve as the manufacturer the products for BCF and is
will private-label the products to include the BCF logo and
BCF brochure. |
