  ROOTS - ALEX HALEY - original signed copy of the contract for Before This Anger, the working title of what was to become Roots; Haley's 1964 handwritten log book.

  GLORY - hand-colored Currier & Ives print showing the furious attack by the 54th Massachusetts upon Fort Wagner; an archive of The Liberator fully detailing the recruitment and
battles of this first Northern all-black regiment.

  MACON BOLLING ALLEN - document signed by the first
African-American lawyer.

  JACKIE ROBINSON - poignant letter written to an ailing child.

  PLANTATION OVERSEER'S DIARY - Hardscrabble Plantation, Louisiana, 1859-1861.

  NAT TURNER SLAVE REBELLION - complete set of The (Richmond, Virginia) Enquirer with the full story as it happened.

  ZORA NEALE HURSTON - unpublished poem written to sculptor Richmond Barthé.

  IRA ALDRIDGE - rare broadside announcing a major performance of the first African-American Shakespearian Actor.

  MARCUS GARVEY - letter signed as President-General of the Universal Negro Improvement Association.

  RICHMOND BARTHÉ - remarkable autograph book owned by the brilliant African-American sculptor, containing ninety-three important autographs, including many notables of the Harlem Renaissance.

  MARIAN ANDERSON - vintage signed photograph.

  THE EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION - contemporary printing of Abraham Lincoln's proclamation in The New York Herald.

  PAUL ROBESON - letter signed as chairman of the Counsel on African Affairs.

  THURGOOD MARSHALL - letter regarding his work on school
desegregation.

  BILLIE HOLIDAY - signed performance contract framed with portrait.

  EARLY MAP OF AFRICA - original hand-colored map (c. 1640) by Dutch cartographer William Blaeu.

  THE AMISTAD SLAVE SHIP MUTINY - graphic woodcut illustration from the 1840 New Haven pamphlet (included).

  CRISPUS ATTUCKS - 1770 Boston Gazette describing the death of the first black martyr during the legendary "Boston Massacre."

  BLACK SOLDIERS IN THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION - (1775-1783) - archive of over 170 documents (many signed) for 121 African-American soldiers who fought alongside white patriots for the freedom and independence of the United States; includes a rare powder horn used by a black soldier.

  BENJAMIN BANNEKER - original signature and one of the few newspaper accounts ever published about the noted astronomer and mathematician.

  MEDGAR EVERS - letter to Gloster Current, the last man to see Evers alive.
